Title: A Medieval RPG Delivering Frustration: A Firsthand Experience with Crimson Desert at Summer Game Fest
At Kotaku, we strive to deliver honest and bold criticisms of video games without resorting to ambiguous disclaimers. When the medieval fantasy RPG, Crimson Desert, was showcased at this year's Summer Game Fest, I couldn't help but feel a wave of frustration.
Developers face a considerable challenge in these preview sessions, presenting a concise and engaging slice of their game that provides insight while offering enough guidance for players. Crimson Desert, unfortunately, struggled in this area. While some issues might be resolved in a full playthrough, the game's complexity and the frustrating interaction systems I encountered during my brief demo experience made it an unenjoyable experience.
Is it fair to judge a game based on a 30-minute demo? Some may argue yes, as previews are an agreement between developers and critics to showcase their work, or we wouldn't offer our opinions. However, I must acknowledge that there will always be a subset of the internet that may interpret negative criticism as a permanent blemish on the game's reputation.
Playing Crimson Desert felt like wrestling with an unwieldy, unintuitive control scheme, surrounded by enemies that seemed determined to follow me across the battlefield. The game's systems were messy and clunky, and the combat potential was hampered by convoluted interaction systems. Furthermore, the simple task of picking up an object was made unnecessarily complex, requiring multiple button presses that seemed more appropriate in a game that emphasized puzzle-solving over combat.
Each button prompt felt like an unnecessary obstacle, making me question why the game's developers chose such an arduous system. With enemies relentlessly pursuing me, even when I tried to move away or reach my objective, and the character feeling as though they dragged an oversized backpack, the experience felt overwhelming.
Given my longstanding background in gaming journalism, I understand the pitfalls of making sweeping criticisms or knee-jerk reactions. But the sheer frustration I felt while playing Crimson Desert at Summer Game Fest was hard to ignore, even in a disorienting preview setting.
I must state, however, that my experience might not accurately reflect the final version of the game, given my limited time with its systems and enemy behaviors. It's essential to keep that in mind when considering this review as mere feedback on the demo version of Crimson Desert. But, with its cumbersome controls, aggressive enemy AI, and overly complex interaction systems, I can't help but question whether the game will live up to its potential.
