Nintendo's Crackdown on Switch 2 Piracy has Begun: What You Need to Know

Nintendo is serious about piracy. The company has already started its crackdown on piracy for the new Nintendo Switch 2, even before its official release. Here's what you need to know:

• It took hackers over a year to jailbreak the original Switch, but the Switch 2 has one vulnerability its predecessor didn't: backwards compatibility.
• Some new console owners have already tried to use a type of flash cartridge associated with the piracy of Switch 1 games on their Switch 2 consoles, and were promptly banned by Nintendo.
• The makers of MIG Switch, a cartridge for loading Switch 1 games on the Switch 2, recently released a firmware update that made it possible to use the devices to load Switch 1 games on the Switch 2. Nintendo has responded by banning any Switch 2 that it’s seemingly found to have run one of the illicit flash cartridges at some point.

Our advice? It's better to avoid taking any risks that could lead to a ban. Nintendo's previous terms of service gave it the option to brick entire consoles if they violated the agreement. Even though the company hasn't yet started bricking Switch 2 consoles, it's better to be safe than sorry.
